Murray Valley
Also known as the Murray Darling, after the rivers which run through the region, the Murray Valley is Australia’s second largest wine region, producing approximately quarter of the nation’s wine. The regions stretches from the South Australian border, to east of Balranald, NSW, covering over 350km, yet the region remains remarkably consistent throughout.
The continental climate, with little rainfall, makes the area somewhat less susceptible to fungus disease, diminishing the risk which is normally attached to large scale wine production regions. The soil in the region is exclusive to the Murray River system, and generally supports the hearty growth and volume of yields the area is renowned for, with plantings of chardonnay and cabernet sauvignon emphasised across the region.
