Riverland
Australia’s largest wine production area, the Riverland region is located in the central east of South Australia. The region is responsible for producing over a quarter of Australia’s annual grape tonnage, and more chardonnay than the combined regions of South Australia.
Wines predominantly grown in the Riverland are chardonnay, shiraz, cabernet sauvignon, merlot and petit verdot. However, winemakers are continuing to experiment with new grape varieties, such as arneis, as the district expands and alters.
Although the regions’ soils vary greatly across the significant area of land, the continental climate doesn’t. The long, sunny days with cool nights indicates that the fruit can ripen fully, and the wine that results is clean and appealing.
