Yarra Valley

State Victoria

The Yarra Valley is the name given to the area surrounding the Yarra River, beginning around 80km east of Melbourne, and flowing out into Port Phillip Bay, but more commonly refers mainly to the upper regions, rather than the suburban areas surrounding the city.

Victoria’s oldest wine region, with vine plantings dating back to the late 1830’s, now has over 3,600ha planted to winegrapes.  Its best known varieties are those which suit the cool climates best: pinot noir, sauvignon blanc, and sparkling wines, although chardonnay, cabernet sauvignon and shiraz are also grown with reputable results.

It boasts 85 of the state’s wineries, and it’s close proximity to Melbourne makes it a popular tourist destination and Victoria’s most visited wine region.
