New Zealand

The first commercial vineyard in New Zealand was established in 1883 in Northland, and by the
early years of the 20th century there were about 70 winemakers producing approximately 366,000
litres of wine.

By the 1980’s significant controls were introduced to provide for quality standards and label
integrity, eventually leading to a re‐assessment of New Zealand wines by world standards. New
Zealand viticulture and wine making practise is now second to none.

The New Zealand wine industry is only a very small portion of the world industry. According to
the New Zealand Vineyard and Wine Industry Review (Dana, 2006) the industry still has less than
0.2% of global wine production by volume and approximately 0.6% of global wine exports.

The New Zealand wine industry has grown dramatically over the last ten to fifteen years. This
growth is evidenced by an increase in total vineyard area, wine volumes produced, exports and
importantly, in its premium reputation. In particular, New Zealand sauvignon blanc has taken
the wide wine world by storm. New Zealand pinot noir is also highly regarded.
