South Australia

Located in south central Australia, the state of South Australia is bordered by all four other states of the Australian mainland, as well as one of its territories.  South Australia has a reputation for being the driest of all the Australian states, but also the most urbanised, as its capital, Adelaide, homes 80% of the state’s population.

South Australia is most famous for its wine regions, and has been called “the wine industry’s powerhouse State” by AWBC.  It produces more than half of Australia’s wine, and lays claim to some of the oldest vines in the world as a result of the Barossa Valley, north of Adelaide, and the Adelaide Hills surviving the phylloxera plagues which have destroyed vines in other parts of the world.

South Australia has no less than 17 wine regions across the state, ranging from the Southern Flinders Ranges in the top north of the state, to the Coonawarra in the South East, with the first vintage being recorded in 1841 in the Adelaide Hills.
