Victoria
Australia’s smallest mainland state, Victoria is still home to over 4.5 million people and boasts over 21 different wine regions. Victoria’s climate is generally cooler than that of the other states, giving the state’s vignerons the chance to produce rich and elegant wines of deep complexity.
The state’s northernmost wine region is the Murray Darling, which straddles the border between Victoria and New South Wales, is also the second largest Australian wine region, primarily focussing on chardonnay, shiraz and cabernet sauvignon. The southernmost wine region, Mornington Peninsula, has been described as “Victoria’s answer to Margaret River”, offering a choice selection of cellar door outlets, restaurants, accommodation and other tourist attractions.
Victoria is home to more wine producers than any other wine-producing state in Australia, ranking third in overall wine production. In the 19th century, Victoria produced more than half of the nation’s wine until the phylloxera outbreak in the 1880’s. The rejuvenation of the wine industry by 16 wineries in 1966 has seen the state prosper today, with over 600 wineries across the state.
